Tekken 7: Story Discussion

Post by Alisassy on June 2nd 2017, 1:22 pm

Ok so it doesn't seem right to have this in the hype thread. The game is here, we playing it, and this is here to discuss our thoughts on the story.

Obvs it will contain spoilers, up to y'all posting if you wanna use the spoiler tags or not. I've only finished the main story myself so now i can move onto the episodes

I'll put all my thots and feelings in a spoiler tag bc they're long and spoilery

Spoiler:

- I honestly didn't mind the random journalist guy's narrations but like.....did they hire his voice actor off of the street?? He was so bland and it was so cringey hearing him "yell" at Heihachi. Also its funny that they hid his face so much bc after sitting through all of his emotionless monologues I honestly couldn't care less about what he looked like. They def used an altered version of Shaheen's model during that Heihachi scene too.
- The story made me even more upset that Anna's missing because those scenes of Kazuya planning things with generic G-Corp soldiers were boring. I needed Anna's personality to spice things up.
- Julia could've also helped the journalist since she was a spy infiltrating G-Corp labs for Lee. Also the whole "expose Kazuya's devil form to the world" storyline reminded me of her T4 ending where she literally deleted the devil gene lmao
- I was really disappointed with the character stories. My favorite thing about the Tekken storylines is that a character has an objective, and then they have an ending that shows them accomplishing their mission. But instead we get messy little clips that accomplish nothing and leave you wanting more. I would've liked to have seen Josie make it into the Tekken Force, Xiaoyu succeed in finding Jin, Katarina rescue Gigas, etc.
- That being said I did enjoy seeing more of characters' personalities. Lucky Chloe and Eliza were the most entertaining imo. The animators did a great job with body language (especially in the cases of Lili and Katarina)
- Not Ms. Kazumi faking her entire relationship with Heihachi!!! That was one thing I did not see coming I literally thought she was just some pure woman who was cursed with the Devil blood I didn't know she was actually lowkey psychotic and I lived for it. No explanation for the tiger which I'm still pressed about though.
- I do want more information about the Hachijo family though. I kinda hope in Tekken 8 they carry Kazumi's fighting style over to a descendant and she tries to fuck up all the remaining Mishimas.
- I'm glad there's an interesting storyline set-up for Tekken 8. and tbh since it seems like its focused on Jin vs. Kazuya it would be a CRIME not to bring back Jun Kazama. and not just in a flashback like Kazumi but in a literal comeback since she's been "missing".

Spoiler:
Kazumi being reduced to a flashback is fucking awful... I mean why even bring her back if she had no relevance? It was a lowkey plot twist she wanted Kazuya dead too, but at the same time no. Bye.

I can appreciate what we have as a whole. Some of the episodes were really interesting while others are just... terrible.

Spoiler:

There is just no world building outside of the story mode. All we got is two character models on a stage that's playable. The least that could have been done was make it so the characters wore outfits that would have been appropriate with their story. Steve was the only one who wore something different.

Josie has a perfectly good workout outfit that's locked in customization to express that she was doing her training in her and Kuma's episodes.

Spoiler:
Now I see why the marketing was so shoddy, there's barely anything to market. All of the story trailers they showed leading up to release was already like 80% of the story.

I agree with CFW, zero world building. No context at all, no character development for anyone besides Heihachi. They're going to struggle again with T8 because they still have a bunch of unresolved story issues, a whole lot more filler characters. Also agree with Alisassy, I like Kazumi but are we really making characters out of flashbacks now? hm. I honestly dont get why they couldnt have just moved the character intro to the start of arcade mode, put the encounter cutscene in the middle like T5, and given them a special CGI movie at the end. I want to know exactly what the delay was for ???????????????????

I find the writing overall to be extremely weak and contrived. Literally the stereotypical: 'redemption arc' for this evil guy who has... emotions! This is just fodder for Mishima fans. Gag. Give me Anna.

Spoiler:

Yeah I really thought Kazumi was gonna be a ghost or something.....but since she's just a flashback I guess we can still expect playable Heihachi in Tekken 8 lmao.

Also, can we get into how terrible the menu layout for the story is? Who thought that book layout was good?
